Movember

When you get a crazy idea that you are excited about, I think you need to go with it. Right? At least that’s what I’m telling myself. So here’s the deal. I have decided to not shave for the entire month of November. Yep, I’m growing a beard. You are probably wondering why. I don’t blame you.

Over the past couple days I’ve been noticing a lot of talk in the social media about Movember. It sparked my curiosity, so I did a little research and according to Wikepedia, Movember (a portmanteau of the words “Moustache’” and “November”) is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November. The event was started in 1999 by group of men from Adelaide, Australia. Petty cool, right? So I did a little more research and found out that there is also a charitable organization called Movember and Sons that helps to raise money for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. Even cooler, right? Participants, known as Mo Bros (or Mo Sistas), proudly wear theirmoustaches for 30 days as support for the cause. The moustache symbolizes a ribbon that helps to generate conversation, awareness, and ultimately, funds for men’s health. Who knew?

After all this research and some serious thinking, I decided to join the cause and grow a stache! Well, a beard. I can’t just do a mustache.

I decided to register with Movember and Sons which allowed me to create a donation page. If you’d like, you are more than welcome to donate. I’m not trying to win anything or soliciting your hard-earned cash. I know things are tight for so many and this is a tough time of year to be asking for money. But, If you do have some spare change and want to help out, it would be amazingly appreciated. You can find My Mo Space Page here. Thank you in advance.

Thanks to Renee of CreatingHOME for creating this masterpiece!

So here’s to a fun and festive Movember! I’ll be sharing updated photos here every once in a while.

Have you ever heard of this? Does anyone in your family participate? Do you think I’m crazy?

  1. You’re not crazy! All the guys in my dorm did this, but not for the cause, just for fun! At the end of the month, they got a hold of an old history book and then trimmed their facial hair to look like the men featured in the book and kept them until the end of the semester – it was a great source of comic relief during a busy time of year!

I love that you’re doing it for a great cause, though! You’re so awesome and fun :)

  2. I am an Aussie and it is a very popular cause here. My city is Bendigo and our newspaper changes its name to the Bendimo Advertiser every November. One year all the male staff at my school joined in – more than 50 men.
It is lots of fun but many people are very pleased to see December arrive!
Good on you for joining in – it really does highlight men’s health.
