My Completed Gallery Wall

You may remember that over a year ago I started a gallery wall in my downstairs hallway. Well, just before Christmas, I finally managed to finish it.

I really wish I could explain why it took me so long to complete it, but honestly I have no excuse. It’s quite possible that this is the project I’ve procrastinated the most on. But at this point, that’s neither here nor there.

Given the fact that it’s taken me so LONG, I don’t have a list of sources for the prints. I’ve collected some from various trips, Etsy, and Society6. If you see something you are DYING to know the source for, please let me know in the comments below and I’ll do my best to track it down for you.

All the frames are from various places as well. Most came from Target, Walmart, or Ikea. However, a few were thrifted or custom. The custom ones were ordered from Frames By Mail. I also bought a few custom mats here.

My favorite frame is this ornate one from Goodwill. It was gold to start, but a quick coat of white paint gave it a whole new life. I may incorporate a few more frames like this one if I happen upon them.

I also found a framed chalkboard (to the left of the door) and a chunky wood branch chalkboard pencil. It’s pretty sweet. This allows me to personalize my wall for the season or a special event.

I was actually able to complete this wall thanks to a few pictures I took on my trip to Portland. As much as I love being able to purchase prints, I really like to include some of my own work and photographs.

I also tucked in a few favorite pictures of family and friends.

I am super happy that the gallery wall is finally presentable. I’ll probably swap out a few frames and pictures over time, but for now I’m going to enjoy it as is .

What do you think of gallery walls? Do you have any in your home?

  1. You have inspired me to do one of these to my wall at work! I’ve been pondering what to do, and this is perfect! I received a fantastic starting piece for Christmas too…off to Etsy. Thanks!

    • Awesome! You’ll have to share a picture when it’s complete! I can’t wait to see it.

  2. It’s amazing how so many unrelated pieces can be combined on a wall and look perfect when they are all put in white frames. You’ve done a fabulous job of making a wall that represents you and what you find interesting to look at. Doesn’t it feel great to get a project completed after time spent collecting and searching?

I have a vision of creating a gallery wall with a bunch of my old family photos that I’ve been restoring. There are pictures that go back as far as my great-great grandparents on each side of my family. I’ve gotten a little sidetracked from the project in the past few months, but I think I might be a little more encouraged to get back to work now!

    • Wow! That sounds like such a fabulous idea. I’m sure the end results will be gorgeous!

Yeah – it probably took a LITTLE too long. But at least it wasn’t rushed. Right? Haha!

  3. It’s super terrific Michael. I love all the fames in white. So terrific looking. I pinned it! By the way, I love your blog and your decorating style.

  4. How wonderful is that! Your gallery looks marvelous, Michael! I particularly love the upcycled thrift shop frame you painted white. Now why can’t I score finds like that? ;)

    • Isn’t that frame the best? Thanks so much Kris. Just keep looking – you’ll find one.

      xo Michael

  5. Wow ! Your gallery looks terrific. I love the 2 little otters just floating along. Could you share some information about the print? Please. Once again…Great Job!

  6. Hi! Im new to your site and love it!! I have the same kindess print from suzanne here in Richmond! Love her to work. Would love to know the color of the foyer walls. Thanks for all the wonderful posts!

    • Thanks so much Julia. I BELIEVE it’s Angora from Sherwin Williams. I’m going to do a post next week that details all the paint colors in my house. Hopefully that will help everyone out. :)

  7. Love the gallery wall – the addition of friend/family pictures is something I need more of on mine! Do you have any info on where I can get a light fixture like the one that snuck in a few of your pictures? Falling in love with that guy! Any tricks with bulbs in a globe that open?

    • Katrina – it’s from Pottery Barn. I’m not sure if they still sell it or not. While I typically love their fixtures. This one isn’t my favorite. It challenging to get it clean (dust / streak free) plus it looks best with the vintage style bulbs, but they give a really orange / yellow glow and I don’t love that either. Just my opinion but it could work for your space.

      Hope that helps!

  8. so nice and put together! i really do love it. i have small gallery wall done with pics me & my sis took of flowers and butterflies. i also have a small one with old needle points that i have found at thrift stores & yard sales. i love the print you have of the cloud that says “i pee on you”!

    • It’s the best when you can create a wall with things that mean something to you. Love that!

  9. I love the gallery wall Michael! Finding great frames from thrift stores and updating them seems to give gallery walls more personality than only using store bought ones. We have 5 gallery walls in our house, it might be a problem. I just can’t stop doing it! LOL My husband and I have a habit of buying local art/photography when we travel and places we have lived for souvenirs and white frames are the perfect way to make them cohesive but still eclectic. Love it! Do you have a favorite?

    • I ADORE that idea. I typically like to pick up artwork when I’m traveling too. It’s a fun way to remember a visit. A favorite? Probably the picture I took in Portland of the graffiti wall. I think.

      xo Michael

  10. Everything you do comes out fabulous! Do you happen to remember where you got the long, landscape picture of the row of houses? Also, love the “Pee on You” print – any memory of where that came from?

  11. It looks wonderful! I have been so hesitant to do a gallery wall because I haven’t been able to pull the trigger on the frame/mat combo. All white is so refreshing and really puts the emphasis on the art. I think I’m ready to tackle it now! :)
Oh, and the radiator is gorgeous! So ornate…never seen anything like it before (but then I am from the South and we don’t even have them).
Lastly, I LOVE your art. The cloud watercolor is hilarious and totally my sense of humor. I think we might be kindred spirits ;)
Blessing to you Michael! And congrats on completing the project. It was a huge one (I would procrastinate too). Happy 2014!

    • Thanks a Million Jenn! I’m so pleased with the way it turned out. And yes – the radiators in my house are so wonderful.

      xo Michael

  12. Love the gallery. It’s so nice and uniform. Thanks for the link for the custom mats and I love the Sea Otter art :)

  13. Your gallery is gorgeous! You say that it took a long time, but that’s the best way, because then it gave you room to grow your collection. Years of things that caught your eye. :) If you don’t mind, I totally want to use this as inspiration for my living room wall. Love it!

    • You said it Emily. I guess it was just meant to take that long. And yes, feel free to use it as inspiration.

      xo Michael

  14. I love it, so wonderful! I’ve got a sort-of gallery wall going, but it’s a work in progress and I always look at it and doubt my placement, but I love all the things hanging there and each one makes me smile. I love, love the cloud art, hilarious! It’s always good to have a sense of humor tucked into things like this. I’ve got this print because as soon as I saw it, I knew I *had* to have it. The little bird peeking in on his friends is just so funny to me. (hopefully this link will work) https://www.etsy.com/transaction/88528254?ref=fb2_tnx_title

  15. This looks amazing!!!! I love all of the art work and how it’s mixed with sayings and your own photos. I have been collecting prints and art and snapping photos for years, and I so want a wall like this one day. If we ever just will live in one place for longer than a year or two…

    • Good point Katja! I’m sure it will be an extremely special and beautiful wall though. Hope you are well. :)

      xo Michael

  16. This turned out beautifully! It’s hard to find a gallery wall I like…too much going on or too busy and colorful. This was perfect. The all white frames keep it calm and the prints mixed with your pictures and friends and family is just perfect! Great job! I am going back for a second look!

    • Awww! Thanks so much Janette. Yes, I agree that the white frames really help to make the art the focal point and keep the rest very simple. So glad you like it!

      xo Michael

  17. Just started looking at your site and from the 3 posts I’ve read, I LOVE your style! :) Great job on your gallery wall. I am obsessed with your chalkboard idea to customize through the holidays/seasons! Your photography on your posts is really outstanding (what drew me to read more!) Are you self taught? <3

    • Awww! Thank you so much Shelly! I’m glad you are enjoying things. Yepper! Self taught photographer. Thank you for following along!!

      xo Michael

  18. Hi Michael!

One of my customers just told me that she saw my work on your blog (I painted the ‘Otterly Romantic’ otters holding hands piece) and I am so excited to see it featured here! Thank you so much for supporting so many artists and for spreading the otter love to your readers. What a wonderful surprise!

Peace, Love & Guinea Pigs (& otters!),
