About a month ago I went to California for the first time. I’ve actually been meaning to blog about that trip for a while now, but just totally forgot. In fact, last October I went to Portland, Oregon and never blogged about that. I’m a little behind, aren’t I? Maybe we need a travel week on IBC.

Anyway, while I was in California I spent one afternoon with the fabulous people at Hello Society. They are one of the amazing companies that I work with that help to make IBC possible. They are truly a spectacular team. We went to lunch at an amazing restaurant right along the Pacific Coast Highway. The deck of the restaurant where we sat literally hung out over the ocean. Amazing. I had this cocktail there that was called Sweet Heat. I’d been wanting to recreate the recipe at home and today’s 80 degree temperature put me in the mood.

I will admit that that ingredients in this drink are a little odd. Jalapeño. Weird, right? However, it’s epically delicious. It’s like a tropical drink with a little kick. The ginger helps, too. So while I realize this drink may not be for everyone, if you are into this sort of thing, you’re going to love it.

I also think this is the perfect concoction to serve as your signature cocktail for some fabulous summer festivity. The ingredients are simple and the drink is pretty straight forward. However it’s totally unique and special enough to be memorable.

Sweet Heat

Here's what you will need:

2 ounces vodka
1 1/2 ounces pineapple juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
3 slices jalapeño, thinly sliced
2 slices ginger, thinly sliced
1 lime wheel for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, muddle together the jalapeño, ginger, simple syrup. Add ice, vodka, and simply syrup. Shake vigorously. Pour into a glass and garnish with a lime wheel.

  1. When I make my “special”margaritas, I usually chill my fave smooth tequila in the fridge with fresh jalapeno slices quartered. If served on the rocks, I try to use fresh ice or ice not tarnished by refrigerator odors or serve it martini style. Of course i squeeze in some fresh lime and lemon.. My two fave and unique ingrediants are: 1. Tres Agaves Organic Margarita Mix 2 Badia Baranha Agria Sour Orange marinade. Neither mixer is very high in carbs or sugar. Instead of a green margarita this cocktail has an orange hue. I don’t rim the lip of the glass with salt, I just add a few sprinkles of kosher or sea salt after topping the drink off with a splash or two of Grand Marnier. Stir (rocks) or shake (martini) and be prepared to love this fresh, spicy-tasting, yet not too sweet margarita!

  5. This is my new favorite drink!!!! I’ve got so many jalapenos in my garden and I love that I can use them in this drink! I’ve also made it with bourbon when I was desperate and out of vodka. It was wonderful!
