Summer Home Tour!

Hello, everyone! This is the first time I’ve ever participated in a blogger home tour series, and I couldn’t be more excited If you are stopping over from The Hunted Interior, welcome! Isn’t Kristin’s home fabulous? I am majorly in love with her outdoor space.

Gina of Shabby Creek Cottage is graciously hosting the 2014 Summer Tour of Homes. You can check out this post for links to the 25 bloggers who are participating in the series. Start there, and each blogger will guide you to the next person on the tour.

But before you do that, now that you’re here, you might as well have a look around my abode. Because I’m weird and the upstairs of my house is in a bit of a transition (meaning it’s a hot mess), we are going to stay on the first floor for this summer house tour. Sound good? Over the past year, there have been a lot of changes in my little house. For those of you who are new to Inspired by Charm, my house previously functioned as a Bed and Breakfast and Gift Shop. About a year and half ago, I closed my B&B and turned this big old 100-year-old house into my home.

This is going to be a photo tour so I will be brief with my words and let the photos do the talking. I will link up any relevant posts below the questions for more information and / or tutorials. If you have any other questions, please leave a comments and I will do my best to answer them.

Enjoy the tour and stay as long as you like. I’ll put on some coffee or pour a cocktail.

Well, I certainly hope you enjoyed looking around today! Hopefully, on the next tour, I can get things together and take you upstairs where all the magic (or lack thereof) happens! Looking at the pictures, I’m reminded how much this house has evolved over the years. I am filled with a sense of pride, but also realize there are so many things to improve and lots of projects left to complete.

Now, don’t let the fun stop here. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, there are 25 bloggers participating in this tour so go check them all out (links below). I sort of feel like a schlub when I compare my home to theirs. For me, it’s just an honor to be included in the tour.

If you are following this tour in order, next up is the uber-talented Jennifer Rizzo. I’m excited to see her happy space all ready for summer!

Thank you again for visiting. I’ll post the full list of bloggers below to make things super easy for you.

  1. Just love it! Your home is cozy, personal, and charming! Love the layering of patterns, textures, mixes of different styles, and your space layout + vignettes. No corners are overlooked and yet the house is not over “styled”. I really enjoy the tour and thanks for lots of inspiration!

    • Thanks so much Bev! I can’t wait either! It will be nice to have things finished up and in order. Hope you are well!

      xo Michael

  2. I’m new to your blog, and you have a marvelous home. I love that you kept the integrity of the home yet it’s still updated for the times. LOVE the crisp clean color palette.

  3. Absolutely beautiful!!! But I will admit…. I am smitten with the “Trim” … the “hardwood floors”….”the baseboards” … “the doors”.. “the door knobs”… and those “amazing windows” on each side of the fireplace!!! :) I am a sucker for Craftsman style homes anyway…. the way you have preserved the style of the home…. and then the decor!!! Welll… Just love it!!!! Thank you for sharing!!

  5. Love it, Michael! Your use of color and simple design is perfection! Welcome back??!!

  6. Love your home. It is so charming. I was wondering how you hang your plates on the walls. I didn’t notice any plate hangers on them in the dining room. Thanks.

    • Jan, great question! I used Flatiron Discs Invisible Plate Hangers. I buy them on Amazon.

      xo Michael

  7. Lovely pictures of your home! Thank you for sharing! What color is the hallway (acrylic table in front of barndoors) painted? Thanks!!

    • Hey Terry! I assuming you’re referring to the gray color? It’s Aloof Gray from Sherwin Williams.

      xo Michael

  8. I never tire of looking at your fabulous house. I can’t think of one teeny tiny thing I’d change. It is fabulous in every way. Thanks for letting me look around.

  9. HI Micheal,
I adore your home! I love how you mix old and new, the industrial and rustic and modern prints. I am a HUGE sucker for all of your architecture and the way you have your home laid out. I always loved your living room, but I really loved your entire home tour!

  10. Oh goodness. Thank you so much for participating in Gina’s home tour. I’m looking back a bit through your archives–and you are a fellow Canadian? Hooray! The web needs more of us. You and I are kindred spirits, I think. I love the same mix of modern and traditional, colour and white space. But you, sir, are fabulous–I’m just bumbling along! So glad to have found you and your blog, I cannot tell you.

  13. Wow, I just discovered your blog today on the Summer Tour of Homes and love-love-love your clean, bright, eclectic mix! Thanks for sharing.

  14. I have always lived in a big old 2 story and will say there is nothing better than spending my days in living history. I am smitten with the lazy susan on the patio table. Did you make it or is repurposed something? Thanks!

    • Thanks so much Stephanie! It’s actually an old wooden washing machine agitator. Totally a vintage find! Isn’t it great!?

      xo Michael

  15. Goodness… with every picture I nodded my head. I’m SO glad you were part of this tour Michael, this home makes one fantastic scroll!

And you know I honed into anything old or vintage. You’ve married old with new beautifully! This is one of the most gorgeous tours I’ve ever seen. Are you ready for a few magazines to come calling? It’s coming!

  16. Michael,
I’ve been following you for a while now — and I just love the way you style…… Your house has such a great energy that I wish we were friends and I could come have a tea with you…
Love what you’ve done and can’t wait to see the upstairs!
    Pam

  17. Michael your home is AMAZING!!! I am completely obsessed with the light fixture in your hallway!! Just kept staring at it. LOL! So thrilled and honored to be part of this Summer tour of homes with you!
    Vanessa

  18. So fun – love discovering new inspiration! Thank you! Do you have a secret place to get those fabulous vintage street signs you use in your kitchen? (please say yes, please say yes!) I’ve been hunting for just those types of signs at flea markets, and stalking some places on the internet and can’t seem to find what you have!
    Andrea

  19. Hi Michael! I’ve followed your blog for a while so I’ve seen a lot of these rooms take shape. I loved your home tour because it was fun to see the rooms all together and how your first floor is laid out. Love all the personal details and your style! Well done!

  20. Michael, I came over from The Hunted Interior to tour your home. This is my first visit to your blog and it won’t be my last! Your home is so fresh and fun! There are so many great ideas to soak up here. Thanks for sharing your home with us – I thoroughly enjoyed it!

  21. Michael, your home is so, so charming and just utterly clever. I love everything you’ve done with putting your own stamp on it and it still has the charm of an old house. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished!

  22. I’ve seen bits and pieces of your home here and there but I love seeing it altogether! Your home is so gorgeous and full of inspiration! I’m trying not to pin every image but I can’t help myself haha

  29. it looks awesome! i have not visited in a while and LOVE the new to me color in the dining room. mine is also charcoal, and i have bentwoods i have been thinking of painting black…. i might be convinced! gorgeous home, michael!

  30. Your home is just to die for! I love the attention to every single little detail. My dream is taking a big 100 year-old house and redoing it, so I’m going to live vicariously through you!

  31. Gah!!! Jesus didn’t give me the spiritual gift of home decorating, even though that’s the one I wanted the most. And since I accidentally found your blog through this whole fun, summer house tour thing that’s going on… I’ve come to realize that your style is also my style. So come on over for a cup of coffee, and I would be more than happy to let you use my house as a guinea pig in a complete Redecorating-palooza! Now THAT could be a blog party, huh?! You can show BEFORE snapshots of my house, with mismatched throw pillows that would send HGTV hosts into shock, and then you could work your magic and show AFTER pictures, where the HGTV crew sighs in happiness. Your house is adorable… and I might just covet all the CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN, because we have a two-year-old son and a thirteen-year-old son… enough said there on the condition of our floors and bathrooms!

    • Hahaha! It sounds like you have it all figured out! And I really appreciate that you love my style. Sometimes I question my decisions, so I appreciate that someone else appreciates it. :)

      Thanks!!
      xo Michael

  32. The first time ever? I think you should do more house tour series because your house is total eye candy. I could look at it over and over again and as a fellow cat lover I totally need that cat on your mantel. Love it so much. Did you find it thrifting?

    • Awww! You are so sweet Julia! Thanks. Maybe I’ll have to do more. Everyone seems to have enjoyed this. Yes, the cat is solid brass. I found it at a thrift shop in Portland, Oregon last fall. Isn’t in the best!?

  41. I just love every picture and every little corner. Your pics are always so fantastic. I know it has been a labor of love but you have done such an amazing job. I am always intrigued by your clear acrylic entry table. I would never have thought to place that there and it just works so well. Thanks for sharing the tour with us! xo

  42. Sorry, don’t know why I jumped to the conclusion you were in Canada. Came back today for another look around, anyway! Could you do a post on your paint colours? I would love to have it ll in one place! Thanks.

Yes! I’m working on putting a post like that together. It should be up soon!

It looks like it took you 100 years to add all of those carefully thought out layers and the best part is I know you place those vignettes in your sleep…that’s having “the eye”. I love the minty paint color in your office- what is it??
